Moncouche was never designed as a holiday rental. It's a place that has been lived in, loved and passed down. The furniture has a history, every room has its own character, and not everything needs to match perfectly. Today, the estate is open to families and groups who come to write their own chapter here.
History & family
Le Clos de Moncouche is an 18th-century Périgord farm: four buildings arranged around an enclosed courtyard. Three are habitable wings, each with its own entrance from the courtyard; the fourth, the pigeonnier, is a traditional stone dovecote.
First a small monastery, then a tobacco farm, Le Clos was bought by my grandfather in the 1940s: a family history passed down for three generations.
A lane that leads nowhere else.
The small road leaves the countryside and stops at Moncouche. Beyond it, there's no way through. You've arrived.
The spirit of the house
Le Clos de Moncouche isn't a house styled to look like a catalogue. The furniture has a history; the books have been read, the records have been played, and the walls are hung with paintings old and new — street art included — alongside the family's own photographs.
Before it was ours, this house was a small monastery, then a tobacco farm. My grandfather bought it in the 1940s. It has stayed in the family for three generations, although we now live in Austria. I spent my whole childhood here, with my grandmother Mômone and my parents: as children we built huts and spent our days outdoors, the dog running free across the 28 hectares. My parents often welcomed groups of friends. Everyone felt at home, young and old alike — and that's the spirit we wanted to keep now that we've opened Le Clos to guests.
